Can a solo VJ make a living as a freelancer?

My recent posting about the local ABC affiliate going through a huge shake up and the discourse over at Oregon Media Insiders about how the craft of TV news journalism is diminished by the new solo VJ paradigm has me somewhat discouraged over what I see as a golden opportunity for huge shifts in the way content is presented and distributed.

I admit that I aspire to the quality of shooting that exists on such channels as Discovery Channel, The Travel Channel, and others.  It seems though that one cannot make it alone - or can they???

You have the gear, you get the training, your reel looks good - now how do you market yourself???  I think one aspect of this VJ paradigm shift is the almost total lack of the business end of the solo VJ profession.

How does one actually make it if one doesn’t want to tie themselves to the drama that seems to be the daily discourse at typical news and print organizations???  How can you develop a body of work locally if the stigma of Solo VJ’s in a sense, black lists you from having your work seen by local TV and print media outlets in the first place?
Maybe that is something to consider over the course of this newly birthed profession that is experiencing growing pains.

I’ve put out inquiries on this very topic and I’m curious to see what comes of it - hopefully there will be words of wisdom about this very subject
