Online Video Statistics show a shift in viewing trends

The thedvshow.com has posted a link to Streaming Media’s latest article about the increased usage of online video.

Some interesting highlights from the article:

College students lead in online video consumption.
What this statistic means to us: boring videos will have the stop button pressed just as fast as the play button. Create videos with the 20-30 year old demographic in mind.

(Not sure how I feel about that one - they aren’t the only demographic out there)

The percentage of online users viewing videos online in 2011 will be 86%, up from 62.8% in 2006.
What this statistic means to us: the normal distribution methods (DVD, etc.) are officially considered old school.

56% of online viewers prefer embedded ads related to the content.
What this statistic means to us: Hey, targeted, niche advertising really does work- really!

(This IS the future of online video for those looking to see an ROI for Internet Broadcasting)

652 million people will be capable of viewing 3GP video by 2010.
What this statistic means to us: a large amount of people will be missing out on seeing your video if you’re not converted your content for mobile phones.

As a Solo VJ, this kind of information is important since the WAY people view content suggests that traditional outlets for media will become less important and will be replaced with cutting edge distribution models. Internet broadcasting has become the new buzz phrase over at Adobe and they’re pushing themselves as an all in one solution from content acquisition all the way through to delivery.

Those who dismiss these findings are in for a rude awakening - especially if they choose not to adapt to the profession. They are very likely to find themselves left out in the cold - or worse yet, not working if they don’t keep abreast of the latest trends for their work.

It’s something to think about.
