Videojournalism: How-to implement it and why newspapers can beat TV

Over at The Editors Weblog, my friend and colleague in the Solo VJ paradigm, David Dunkley Gyimah of Viewmagazine.tv, is interviewed about what he feels is necessary for newspapers to transition over to video.

His detailed breakdown is worthwhile reading for anyone in the print news biz looking to implement video as a part of their organizations services to the public.

I do disagree with his recommendations for the editing hardware/software side of things.

I personally don’t believe that the Apple Macbook Pro is the best solution for shooter/editors to get their pieces done in a short time frame with professional results. My experience has led me to the conclusion that Windows XP Pro laptops (I prefer Dell Latitudes) running SONY Vegas 7 for the bulk of both video and audio editing and SONY Sound Forge for more advanced audio editing and cleanup are the best way to go.

Since Solo Video Journalists are doing the shooting and editing , projects don’t need to be shared with other editors who would handle specific tasks such as audio editing or color adjustments. Applications like Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid Xpress work in an archaic workflow methodology. You have more applications to learn and system resources are tied up due to multiple applications running on a Solo VJ’s laptop in the field.

Sorry mate, we aspire to the essence of the Solo VJ paradigm - but how we get there is a different path for each of us - Cheers!

hahaha actually I was never that prescriptive. Anything will do I said, but I understood the need for the good journo writing the piece to have something there when he asked:”Well what do you use/recommend”.
I know that much from working cloesely with the print journos, particularly over the last two years that many prefer PC-driven solutions, so AVID, Pinnacle on Sony Vaios/ Dells do nicely.
We covered a lot of ground over an hour or so, so hey I think he wrote a much better piece than I could have talked. I won’t complain. Stay vigilant though my good friend :)
p.s On a personal note I do prefer Macs - a debate that is old as computers and if you touch this one off, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Actually what you should do is walk into an Apple mac store and shout “Macs are rubbish”. Tell me what happens. tehehe :)
