We are becoming the irrational media makers

We defy convention - we aspire to make a difference - to lend a voice with our video cameras, our voices, and our interests.

David Dunkley Gyimah has become one of my cyber-mentors - a man who has a revolutionary vision - that of changing the face of news, one Video Journalist at a time.

In a recent post on his blog, David’s opening statement speaks volumes about removing the entrenched, elitist news keepers who feel it’s their right to tell us what they think they want us to see and hear.

“I’d like to be involved in building a school for media makers; irrational ones who insanely believe they can make a difference.”

I have felt that way from the very beginning of my photojournalism career when it started back in the late 80’s.   I didn’t have a formal photojournalism education, I only knew what I saw and what I wanted to do -  tell the world about people and things that they would not typically know about - with a drive, a zeal for what I saw and how it moved me.  I am a passionate kinesthetic learner - and that shaped how I captured my images.  That sheer passion led to some unexpected jobs and awards for the work I produced.

I heard it said recently on CNBC’s “The Big Idea” that one should “Do what you love because then it never seems like work”.

That belief drives what I do every single day.
